About this coffee
Nestled between the Western Highlands and Chimbu, Jiwaka is located in the very fertile valley formed by the Waghi River. Coffee and tea are the two main resources of its inhabitants. In a beautiful landscape, coffee grows in a steady hot, and humid climate and under shade, which fosters a slow and complex maturation of the cherries. North of the province, the Jimi River runs through the lush slopes of the tropical rainforest of the Bismarck Range. Off the beaten tracks, the Jimi area is located a full walking day from the road. The Jimi River Coffee network is a group of coffee producers consisting of 703 smallholders owning on average 0,70 hectares. They focus on producing coffee collectively and following Good Agriculture Practices (GAP). The GAP standard includes social, environmental, and also economic criteria like reduced water usage, appropriate use of fertilizers, animal well-being or productivity increase amongst others. Those standards have been put in place by the UN to support the needs of the world in 2050 - when the population would have doubled. Producers of the Jimi River Coffee network live in five of the most isolated communities of Papua New Guinea. Remoteness obliges, coffee is cultivated and processed traditionally and meets all criteria of the Organic certification. Parchments are then delivered to a collection point - a long day walk away from the villages. Thanks to the Jimi River Coffee network, families benefit not only from the support of a community but also from better access to the market for their products and improved livelihood.
